Summer is here! What to do with the Kids?

How about taking your children back to the values our parents grew up with as the standard in society? Turn off the television, the video games, and the cell phones and do projects together that will build stronger relationships in your family that will serve you a lifetime.

Find something that your family can improve at your home, and then involve the family in planning and carrying out the improvement. Then, you can extend those lessons to benefit your community.

My family is embarking on an adventure with my wife and three of the four children now that our oldest son has gone to college. We have purchased a small home in a small community. The home is going to take some work to get into shape which will most likely build character in all of us.

My wife and I decided to make this a family project to build teamwork and instill some of the values we learned as children. It is also important to us as educators to provide as many thinking and problem-solving skill’s opportunities for our children as possible. How can we put these learning objectives into the teaching vehicles of sanding, power washing, painting, refinishing, working with contractors, and constant cleaning to instill teamwork, honesty, and build character in our children?

We will just have to see what path we are taken down. As any parent knows, sometimes the best plans in the world are changed. The challenge is to keep focused on the goal. Multiple teenagers in the house keep this challenge a mountain to conquer the likes of Mt. Everest.
